    Fairytales in Music

    January 13, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Music has always played a very big part in almost every aspect of our lives. We are constantly surrounded by music, and we have grown so used to it that it has become second nature to us. Without music, it is hard to imagine how our lives would be. Imagine a wedding or any sort of a joyous celebration without music. While laughter and smiling faces will always make these sort of events memorable, it is the presence of music that completes the whole picture.

Melvin Tix the clownductor will be the guest conductor for ‘Fairytales in Music’, happening at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas this 14th and 15th January 2012

What better way to make music more special than to add the element of fun into it? Birdian Quartet and Sax Friends

    January 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm

When one thinks of saxophone music, one of the first things that comes to mind is Kenny G. For years, Kenny G has entertained us with many of his wonderfully relaxing and entertaining smooth saxophone pieces. Though saxophone music may not be very much in style these days, its music never fails to evoke a sense of peace to those who hear it.

The Birdian Saxophone Quartet consists of Ian Chan Wing Hang, Richard Goh Hao Tian, Foo Yee Lee and Cheryl Mah Yiing Chiau

If you are a fan of smooth jazz music, then there is a chance that you would already know how music from a saxophone quartet sounds like. A saxophone quartet is usually made up of one B soprano, one E alto, one B tenor and one E baritone. For those who are curious to see how a saxophone quartet sound like, then make a date with The Actors Studio this 15th January 2012 as the Birdian Saxophone Quartet will be performing at The Actors Studio @ Lot 10. The performance will also see the quartet perform with a bunch of sax friends and will feature music from Leroy Anderson, Joe Hisaishi and many more.

Founded in 2000 and led by founder/saxophonist Ian Chan Wing Hang, this group has a passion in promoting interest in and appreciation of classical saxophone music. The Birdian Saxophone Quartet also regularly performs a wide range of light classical, jazz standards, popular and film music repertoires at different occasions. It also conducts workshops for various school band camps and music festivals within Kuala Lumpur. Tickets are by a minimum donation of RM 20 and can be purchased at The Actors Studio. The group will be performing two sessions, that is at 3.00 pm and 8.00 pm. For more information, please call 03 2142 2009 or 2143 2009.

CAN MELAKA SUSTAIN 20 MILLION VISITORS?

A thought just occurred to me recently.

In 2008, just before Melaka was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO, Melaka received 7.2 Million visitors to our City. In 2009, it jumped to 8.9 Million while 2010 we registered 10 Million. In 2011, the figures showed that Melaka received 11 Million visitors.

Though local Malaysians visited Melaka over the years, foreign visitors have also come to visit us in rising numbers. Most visits are over the weekend where Singaporeans make up the most visitors. Other visitors include Chinese, Indonesians, Thais, Indians, Australians and others.

There is a drop in visitors from Sundays to Thursdays and also hotel rooms are plentiful available during this period except over the weekends.

This means we should have activities to entice visitors to come to Melaka during normal days eg. for conventions, business courses, meetings and other artistic and cultural activities. We cannot just rely on weekend visitors.

In 2011, we received 11 million visitors. If we target 1 million extra visitors for each year from 2012 onwards, we can receive 20 million visitors by 2020!!!

A lot of marketing and concerted effort by all must be done if we were to reach this magical figure.

We need to look into the congestion problems eg. car parking within the historical zones, tram system to allow car parks in zones outside the historical city, hotel rooms for our guests ( both luxurious and budget ), cleanliness, entertainment, services and many other aspects to make our guests fill comfortable during their stay here.

New modes to entice visitors to Melaka must also be done eg. cruise liners, chartered flights to our new Melaka International airport, High Speed train system from Singapore or Bangkok, chartered buses, taxis, private cars etc. Getting into and out of Melaka must be done seamlessly and with ease.

We have to make our expansion sustainable and as green as possible so that more and more visitors will enjoy their stay in Melaka.
