MELAKA CABLE CAR TO BE READY BY END 2018

MELAKA: The state will get its
first cable car as well as a
theme park by the end of this
year, said its Chief Minister
Datuk Seri Idris Haron.

He said the project called
“Seven Mini Wonders” cost
RM46mil and the cable car
would run across the Marina
in Pulau Melaka to Klebang
here.

He said the 2.5km cable car
line was proposed to run
overhead at certain busy
locations overlooking the
Straits of Malacca.

“The project will complement
other new tourism products
that have also been planned
for this year,” he said after
chairing the weekly exco
meeting at Seri Negeri here.

“The theme park will be
strategically located and the
whole project aims to attract
even more tourists to the state,”
he said, adding that it would
help boost the state’s image as 
a family-oriented holiday
destination.

Idris said the state’s objective
was to draw more tourists and
record higher arrivals in 2018
than last year.

“The state is looking at the
cable car and theme park
project as an economic driver
to lure more tourists.

HANG TUAH COMMERCIAL CENTRE DEVELOPMENT

Hang Tuah Commercial Centre, Catalyst For Melaka’s Inland Development

MELAKA, April 9 (Bernama) — After the successful development of Melaka Raya, Kota Laksamana, Pulau Melaka and Klebang on reclaimed land, the state government will now move forward to undertake inland development such as the Hang Tuah Commercial Centre.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the centre would require an investment of between RM400 million and RM500 million for the first phase of its development.

The centre which would be sprawled across Jalan Hang Tuah, Jalan Tun Ali, Pengkalan Rama, Kampung Morten to Melaka Sentral would comprise a hypermarket, transportation hub, tourist attractions, residences and institutions of higher learning.

“The state executive council meeting has agreed in principle to the development of the commercial centre in a move to balance reclaimed land and inland development in the state,” he told Bernama here Saturday.

He said the focus of the inland development was to raise the socio-economic status of the people in the area.

“The centre will also focus on academic development. Right now, Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka have their campuses here,” he said, adding that eight developmental projects over 40.5 hectares is expected to be ready in five years.

Idris said two projects which would be the pillars of the commercial centre are the reconstruction of the Hang Tuah Hall and the construction of the Melaka Foundation building.

He said the existing two-storey Hang Tuah Hall will be rebuilt into an eight-storey building. It will continue to house a library but the clock tower within would be upgraded into the main landmark in the commercial centre.

The 25-storey Melaka Foundation building, to be completed in three years costing RM120million, will houses offices and a 252-room hotel that would generate income for the foundation.

Idris said the state government also planned to redevelop buildings which had no more historic value within the Hang Tuah Commercial Centre

“The affected buildings will be refurbished to look attractive so as to be able to generate economic activities in the area,” he said, adding that traffic congestion, the drug menace and prostitution will become a thing of the past.

YACHTING HUB: State plans to build marinas to attract 20pc of seafarers who pass by straits every year

MALACCA: THE Malacca government is hoping to attract 20 per cent of more than 3,000 yachts passing through the Straits of Malacca each year with the construction of marinas along the coasts of Klebang and Tanjung Kling.

The building of the marinas would be a private sector initiative with the support of the state government in terms of land, basic infrastructure and policies.

Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said the state, once a famed port of call for sailors from all corners of the world, had the potential to see its glorious past resurrected.

“I was told that at least 3,000 yachts pass through the Straits of Malacca annually and if we can get 500 of them to stop here, it would not only boost tourism but also create an economic spin off for the local economy.

“The sailors travelling in their own yachts are in a league of their own and they will definitely contribute to our economy.

“With the marinas, we would also provide services such as maintenance for their vessels, medical attention, food and beverages and also other facilities to attract them,” he said after launching two new Catamarans, a 50-footer and a 33-footer, built by local boat manufacturer, Boat Explorer Sdn Bhd, at the Seafarer Restaurant in Klebang here yesterday.

Idris said Klebang and Tanjung Kling could be the next “Gold Coast” in southeast Asia.

“In Malacca, there are many areas which could be turned into marinas but we have to be selective and make it happen. Just look at Sungai Melaka, once an eyesore, it is now the most visited tourist attraction in the state.

“However, before implementing the marina projects, we have to conduct a proper study.”

Asked if the new state administration had any plans to salvage sunken treasures believed to lie off the coast of Malacca, Idris said no proper and credible research had been done on the possible locations.

“If there are pictures of these treasures and proper research done on the vessels, then we do not mind embarking on an exploration to look for them.”

Idris also thanked Boat Explorer, a branded recreational boat builder, for helping to promote the state among its customers.
