Dennis Lau & Shawn Lee @ Mystical Eve

December 20, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Dennis released his maiden album in November 2010, and his album was composed and produced solely by him and featured compositions that amalgamated jazz, pop and the classics. His latest record effort, Unity of Arts, with local beatboxer Shawn Lee, enmeshes funky hip hop beats with black-suit classicism. He calls the collaboration, on which he plays the violin against Lee’s thumping mouth-music, a pure, accidental experiment.

“We met at an event late last year and just decided to start jamming here one night. It drove the neighbours crazy but we figured we could really do collaboration from then,” recalled Lau.

The animated 26-year-old, who also heads his entertainment companies, Mosaic Music Entertainment and Mosaic Movie Productions, adds that he has a penchant for mixing the classical violin with contemporary elements. “I like to experiment with different genres just to see what happens. I think that experimentation is the key to evolution. My collaboration with Shawn also features this group of street-dancers called the Wakaka crew. I think it’s something really different from what has been done. It also introduces how hip hop and classical music can come together,” he explained.

Meet this dynamic duo as they countdown to 2012 at ENCORP Strand!

Najwa @ Mystical Eve

December 19, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Since 2009, Najwa Mahiaddin (Najwa) has worked hard to establish herself – gigging at open mic nights, collaborating with contemporaries (her memorable Malam Nada Biru concert with Yuna) and gradually moving on to standalone shows with her band, Thing One, last year. It’s no exaggeration that she has given the local RB genre a presence in the singer-songwriter scene filled with indie and folk acts.

See Najwa live on New Year’s Eve at ENCORP Strand!

Her past works include a string of collaborations with local hip hop maverick Malique (ex-Too Phat) on tracks like Kau Yang Punya and Senyum and with all-girl supergroup The Ramlees featuring Yuna, Liyana Fizi and Mira (of Tilu) on Itulah Sayang, a track off Astro and XFM’s P. Ramlee … Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti: Satu Indiepretasi compilation album.

Now with her debut album, Innocent Soul, the plucky debutante with alluring appeal hopes to popularise the eclectic sounds of neo-soul in Malaysia. “Neo-soul is a combination of jazz, funk, hip hop and pop and it’s something that is still quite new here,” she said. “There weren’t that many soul idols around when I was a child. I grew up listening to the likes of Billie Holiday and Jill Scott. They’re some of my all-time favourites.”

Mystical Eve @ ENCORP Strand

December 15, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Party like it’s the end of the world. Despite those who say 2012 is the end, let’s party like there’s no tomorrow anyway! Breathing new life into New Year’s Eve, new kid on the block ENCORP Strand, is playing host an amazing line up of local talent and entertainment for those wanting to participate in the revelry that is New Year’s Eve without being squashed into oblivion by throngs of (inebriated) party-goers.

Mystical Eve 2012 New Year’s Countdown Party

Aptly themed, ‘Mystical Eve’, this New Year’s Eve celebration will be a highly-charged evening of diverse entertainment, fun and frivolity for the entire family, with some of Kota Damansara’s best cuisine on offer.

Each year we have fireworks erupting from iconic landmarks, crowds of people celebrating that one moment in time, but then there are the crowds and the traffic jams. Top it off with a stunning entertainment line-up that avoids all the logistical hassles of being in the city centre. Poised with a big stage, state-of-the-art sound system, climate controlled outdoor atrium (yes, it will cool all night long), and loads of parking and other facilities, you can even sit back at midnight and watch the fireworks from across the city in the near distance.

So if you fancy a night out with your family, friends, girl or boyfriend on New Year’s Eve, but have no idea where to go, come and join our line up of performers such as international aerialists ala Cirque de Soleil and the 3D evolution of the ‘Laserman Experience’ that will make the audience stand on their feet and join in the revelry.

Hosted by well-known TV personalities Julie Woon and Megan Tan, the countdown will feature not-to-be-missed performances by some of Malaysia’s ‘who’s who’ from the industry such as Mizz Nina, Joe Flizzow, Pop Shuvit, Najwa Mahiaddin, Reza Salleh, Dennis Lau and his compatriot, Shawn Lee among others.

Suffice to say, the evening promises to be a not-to-be-missed affair by anyone (singles, couples, families) looking to party like there’s no (tomorrow) 2012!

“New Year’s Eve midnight is a single moment in time. We want the countdown to be memorable, surrounded by those we care about. We want Mystical Eve to be something that will blow your mind away with a stunning line-up of great entertainment, backed up by a range of tantalising FB outlets, embedded in outstanding community
spirit. Let it be a time to reflect on the past year, and share dreams for the coming year” said Jason Voon, Project Director for Mystical Eve.

Admission to the party is free with various food and beverage outlets having special promotions for party goers for that special evening. If you have problem with getting there, not to worry because it is easily accessible via the LDP (Leburaya Damansara Puchong), NKVE (North Klang Valley Expressway) and public transport (U88 or Metrobus no 99).

Mizz Nina @ Mystical Eve

December 15, 2011 at 2:40 pm

She needs no introduction to most, her music and her fame is undeniable. Although she has garnered a bit of controversy, but then again, every successful celebrity always does, Mizz Nina remains one of Malaysia’s hottest and coolest female performers in recent years. Her collaboration with Colby O’Donis marked her breakthrough into the global mainstream consciousness, and she has not looked back since.

Join her at Mystical Eve 2012 @ ENCORP Strand this 31st December!

Her debut solo album What You Waiting For, released in July 2010, manifests Mizz Nina’s cool confidence in her newfound vocation as a singer. Sung in English and Malay, the longplayer is a pleasure dome of beguiling beats, innovative melodies and top-notch production, and contains local and international collaborations from the likes of Uno and AJ of Pop Shuvit, Noh from Hujan, DJ Fuzz, Koko and Syaheed of Bedsty Music, Sakke from the Netherlands and Koolade from Croatia to MC Dandee from Bangkok’s Thaitanium Entertainment, Mawar Berduri from Ahli Fiqir, Teeflii and Grammy nominee Planet Asia.

Working with illustrious names in the biz comes as second nature for Mizz Nina, having already sealed liaisons with prominent acts like Too Phat, Reshmonu and Gerhana Ska Cinta throughout her career. But it was the title track and first single from the album that became Mizz Nina’s winning ticket to mass appeal; partnering up with Colby O’Donis, the catchy pop ditty secured strong spots on local music charts. Additionally, the song received regular spins on LA-based radio station 102.3 KJLH while the official video (directed by Scott McCullough and shot in LA) exceeded one million views on YouTube just mere months after its release in March.

Fans of Mizz Nina, don’t miss out on this opportunity to catch her live at Mystical Eve 2012!

Currently shuffling between her full-time role as the Managing Director of The Singing Shop–where her musical education began–and her innate craft as a singer, entertainer and, most recently, mix DJ (a skill she picked up from her TTC ally DJ Fuzz) to running her own recording studio, Mizz Nina has acquired a steady footing in both the Malaysian indie and underground scenes as well as maintained within arm’s reach of the glam and glitz of KL’s city limits–showing her finesse for fitting into any situation presented to her.

Catch Mizz Nina performing at Mystical Eve 2012 @ ENCORP Strand’s New Year’s Countdown party this 31st December 2011. The party will begin at 6 pm and only end at 2 am as we usher in 2012. So put on your party hats and make your way to ENCORP Strand for Mystical Eve 2012!
