Joyful Aidilfitri

The holy month of Ramadan is coming to an end and Hari Raya Aidilfitri is just around the corner. For those who haven’t done their shopping, let’s see what the shopping malls in town have in store for everyone!

Suria KLCC

Themed “Rekindle The Bonds of Traditions”, Suria KLCC, KL’s premier shopping centre celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri with decorations recreating the festival of lights ambience of Malam Tujuh Likur and showcasing the rich cultures of Malay architecture from 14 May until 9 June 2019. The main centrepiece will have a pentagon-shaped porte-cochere inspired by Jahar Palace in Kota Bharu, Kelantan and surrounded by traditional yesteryear-designed shops. A beautiful mini garden with life-sized flowers and colourful painted lamps to create the festival of lights ambience, is set to mesmerise shoppers and visitors alike while traditional Malay fretwork and Islamic geometry patterns give the structures the perfect finishing.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, unveiled its festive celebrations ‘The Beauty of Raya’ inspired by the iconic ketupat, woven through splendid decorations and experiences. The ketupat, a symbol of Malaysian unity and the spirit of Hari Raya, is a beautiful representation of inclusiveness, coming together to share and celebrate Hari Raya together. Feast on diverse buka puasa selections, indulge in seasonal shopping and return to the heritage of weaving ketupat, illuminated by joy and with charity at heart, from now until 13 June.

Sunway Malls

Sunway Malls reunited to celebrate the coming Aidilfitri with a stunning and magnificent flora-inspired campaign called Bunga-Bunga Raya. With the festive season coming to full swing, each Sunway mall is decked out in different species of flowers.

Each mall has their take on this year’s festivities with the unifying theme of celebrating the flowers of Malaysia; Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Orchids, Geranium, Morning Glory and Jasmine.  Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, each flower has a symbolic meaning such as togetherness, celebration, forgiveness, hope, new beginnings and purity respectively.

Sunway Pyramid

Known as the “celebratory flower” in Malay, the hibiscus will be the central theme for Sunway Pyramid this Raya from now until 9 June. The mall is decorated in floral arrangements where shoppers can immerse in a journey through the unique indoor garden with five different activities, each representing a petal of a bunga raya.

Sunway Velocity Mall

Sunway Velocity Mall is elegantly embellished with bougainvillea flowers, which symbolise celebration, passion, and liveliness. Each new bloom is seen as a sign of fresh beginning as Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan.  The mall is transformed into suburban wonderland and furnished with a magnificent kampung house that is adorned with a giant colourful bougainvillea flowers to brighten the Raya celebration.

Large traditional Malay Pelita glistening from the ceiling, draped with lights and bougainvillea flowers, brought light to the festive and elevated the mall’s atmosphere.

Sunway Putra Mall

At Sunway Putra Mall, a visit to the mall will leave patrons mesmerised as the Main Concourse is festooned with Orchid blossoms which universally symbolizes love, beauty and forgiveness. Happening from 3 May – 16 June 2019, the mall is transformed into blossoming Orchid garden with larger than life birdcages placed around the fountain features in a garden setting, providing a picturesque backdrop for patrons. Visitors can take a stroll in the garden, feast their eyes on the green landscape, and enjoy the fragrance of flowers and birds chirping along the pathway. A complimentary photo booth area is available throughout the period for public to take as many pictures as they wish.

Sunway Carnival Mall

Celebrating the theme “Bunga-Bunga Raya” this year, Sunway Carnival Mall’s upper ground concourse is decked with gorgeous voluminous geranium flowers and greeneries to enhance the festive mood that resemble ones ‘kampung halaman’. Each Geranium bloom is seen as a sign of new, fresher beginning or hope as our fellow Muslim friends celebrate the Ramadan.

IOI City Mall

This year IOI City Mall features beautiful structures and elements of different countries in celebration of Eid by bringing in “Eid Celebration Around the World”. Its theme says it all, offering culture, art, delicacies by enjoying the simplicities of Ramadhan with families and friends from different cultures and ethnicity of the world. This Eid celebration has begun from 25 April and will last all the way through to 9 June 2019. “Eid Celebration Around the World” will see a host of spectacular activities to catch your attention at every turn throughout the mall.

1Utama Shopping Centre

Themed “Sulaman Kasih”, weave yourselves a great time this Hari Raya from 15 May to 9 June at lower ground oval, 1Utama Shopping Centre. Spread the festive and come together with your friends and family to celebrate togetherness at the contemporary “weaving bamboo-themed” decoration. Mark your calendars for a line-up of colorful performances and fun-filled workshops and activities. Go Raya shopping and be rewarded with exclusive gift redemption and so much more to do and see!

Avenue K

Celebrate a light-hearted and  blessed Hari Raya Aidilfitri from 10 May to 9 June 2019 at Avenue K. Inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, the theme ‘Radiance of Eid’ at Avenue K shines brightly in bold geometric-shaped structures adorned by bouquets of beautiful tropical blooms. Marvel at a dazzling centre stage of lights, colour, and patterns framed by a mosaic floor of geometric designs and colourful palm trees that create a truly magnificent work of art.

Da Men Mall

Da Men delights the community and shoppers with an unforgettable festive celebration and unique decorations inspired by the beauty of Malaysian woven bag craft and an exclusive partnership with homegrown comic characters Pocotee Friends. Discover “Indahnya Raya” from 20 May till 9 June, where the alluring charm of traditional woven Bag Anyaman takes centre stage, harmoniously crafted to tell an intriguing story. The addition, adorable and beloved characters Pocotee Friends lend a friendly yet mischievous ambience to the mall. Bring the whole family to enjoy plenty of dance, music and entertaining performances too.

Intermark Mall

edf

Rejoice this Raya with tradition of batik, as Intermark Mall presents a slice of Malaysian textile heritage to shoppers and visitors from 20 May till 9 June 2019. Immerse yourself in an “En’chanting Raya’” with festive décor featuring vibrant batik motifs whilst you shop for seasonal favourites.

MALAYSIA SUPER SALE

The Malaysia Super Sale will begin on 1 February until 15 March, offering shoppers 43 days of discounts and bargains at shopping malls and retail outlets nationwide.

The sale season coincides with significant celebrations including Valentine’s Day on 14 February as well as Chinese New Year on 16 and 17 February, thus providing ample opportunities for shoppers to make advanced preparations for the special day.

Shoppers can expect not only discounts of up to 70% on goods and services but also marvel at the gorgeous decorations put up at each shopping mall.

Among the shopping malls in the Klang Valley contributing towards the excitement of the sale, season is Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Putra Mall and Sungei Wang.

At Pavilion KL, the Chinese New Year decorations begin at the iconic landmark just outside the entrance of the mall at the Pavilion Crystal Fountain where shoppers can toss a coin to make a wish. Then step into the colorful gardens of the Main Entrance where flower blooms cascade from above “blessing” those who visit. Pavilion KL’s “Dream Garden of Prosperity” theme goes all out to bless its visitors with good wishes and prosperity. It’s all part of the Visit Pavilion KL 2018 campaign to encourage more people to stopover at the award-winning mall.

Meanwhile, Sunway Pyramid goes with “The Merriment of Spring” theme, rewarding shoppers with a chance to grab All-Season Prosperity Angpows and Reunion Dining Sets. A photo booth featuring a traditional tea house set-up is where shoppers can snap as many photos as they want. There is also a variety of stalls selling the usual Chinese New Year offerings such as beard candy, traditional candies, calligraphy, fresh flowers, and traditional costumes. Shoppers can also enjoy lion dance performances every Saturday at the Concourse.

Not to be outdone, Sunway Putra Mall will ring in the celebrations with its “Wind of Blessings” theme. Visit the Flower Market by Green Pasture selling bountiful blooms, or look out for festive essentials at the Spring Bazaar. Apart from that, there are also great deals and irresistible offers at RM8 at selected outlets. Lion dance performances and art and craft activities are also scheduled while the public are encouraged to toss their wishes at the Tree of Blessings for a special someone and the mall will grant selected wishes. To add to the festive atmosphere, there will be a “Mandarin Orange Eating Competition” for the public to participate and win amazing prizes.

Sungei Wang, one of the oldest shopping malls in KL, is also ready to usher in the year of Earth Dog with the theme “Sungei Wang Garden of Wealth” to spread wealth and prosperity to all its visitors. One of the main highlights at the mall is the Golden Money Tree Ang Pao Pick where shoppers have a chance to win the grand prize of RM888 cash if they are lucky enough to choose the right red envelope! Also not to be missed at the mall is the attempt by the QiLing Dragon Lion Dance Association to enter the Malaysia Book of Records for the title of Longest LED Dragon Dance. The dragon, at a whopping length of 668 feet, will be paraded around the entire Bukit Bintang area at 7pm on 3 February.

Other shopping malls are also going all out to make this sale season a spectacular one. Don’t forget to check out Fahreneit88 with their “Bundles of Luck” celebration; Intermark Mall with their “Streams of Harmony” theme; Suria KLCC with their daily prosperity giveaways; and more!

While shopping in Malaysia is considered one of the popular tourist activities due to the favorable exchange rate, quality of products and diversity of choice, the experience goes up a few notches during the three annual sale seasons in the country.

The other two sale seasons not to be missed are the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival from 15 May to 31 July and the Malaysia Year End Sale from 1 November to 31 December this year.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul

When searching tasty dessert at Penang, the highest searched results I got it is the located at Penang Road, the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul! I think, Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul is one the ‘must’ eat dessert list in Penang.
penang-teochew-chendul-1

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul is just located by the road side of Penang road, so actually is easy to reached the stall even you are taking public transport, such as Rapid Penang.
penang-teochew-chendul-2

While the ingredients have in Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul are just like the ordinary, the green jelly, red beans, shave ice, coconut milk and also the gula melaka. The taste is not sweet and not so creamy as I having in Melaka, maybe I’m used to Melaka flavours?

If you are live at Klang Valley, you can also enjoy your Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul at their branch, where located at the various mall in Klang Valley, one of them is at Sunway Pyramid. But, you have to a little premium price compared you having at Penang road side.

Top10 shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur

I love to shop. What are the must-visit shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Lumpur has numerous shopping malls. Tourists may find it difficult to decide which of them are absolute must-visits and which are the ones that can easily be skipped during their stay in Kuala Lumpur. First off; if you are visiting Kuala Lumpur with the sole purpose of going on a serious shopping spree you should know that there is actually only one place to stay and that is in a hotel around Bukit Bintang. Most of the malls in our top10 are located in this area. Luckily many of the popular 5-star hotels are located in this area, so it should be easy to find proper accommodation. But also budget travelers are able to find accommodation that suits their budget; as there are many guesthouses located in the Changkat Bukit Bintang area (only a 5/10 minute walk from all major shopping malls).

In our list we took multiple factors into account. Not all malls are perhaps interesting for every type of shopper. Some of the great malls are located well outside of Kuala Lumpur, perhaps still very much worth a visit to some, for others probably not worth the hassle.

1. Pavilion KL

Pavilion KL shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Our personal favorite by far is Pavilion KL. Pavilion was opened in 2007 and has been an instant hit since then. Pavilion offers many nice shops, and caters to the more general type of shopper. There are many luxurious shops, but also enough regular shops. Pavilion has a great food court but also many restaurants and (coffee) bars. Definitely the place to be (visit) for tourists.

2. Suria KLCC

Suria KLCC shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Suria KLCC has been one of the most popular tourist malls for ages. Locals always call it a tourist mall, but still many tens of thousands come to this mall every weekend to relax and hang out. Tourists may find many shops offer different products that at other malls, Suria KLCC has many shops that sell familiar international brands (and is also know for carrying western sizes).

3. Plaza Lowyat

Plaza Low Yat shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Not all tourists will like Lowyat as it is small, crowded and often very noisy. Lowyat is the premier IT, Gadget and Lifestyle mall in Kuala Lumpur. Here you will find hundreds of small shops selling luxurious products like cameras, phones, laptops, tablets and much more. If you are looking for electronic accessories, this is definitely the place to be. Do know that you can only get great discounts after some tough bargaining.

4. Midvalley Mega Mall The Gardens

The Gardens shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

This is the first mall that is not located within the city center of Kuala Lumpur. It means that you have to get into a taxi and travel for a bit first before arriving at one of the biggest and most popular (local) mall in the city. Midvalley is already a few years old. Here you can find many regular shops selling all kinds of products. Midvalley is connected to The Gardens, a luxurious mall (and also one of the prettiest) with many exclusive brands.

5. Lot10

Lot10 shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Lot10 is perhaps the most centrally located mall in Kuala Lumpur, right along Jalan Bukit Bintang. It has quite a few nice shops and also a National Geographer Flagship Store. In the basement you can find Hutong, a wonderful food court with mainly Chinese hawkers. Lot10 lies conveniently between numerous other popular malls in Bukit Bintang. If you enter this area by Monorail then the station to embark is right next to Lot10.

6. Fahrenheit88

Fahrenheit88 shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Fahrenheit88 is a modern mall near opposite of Pavilion KL. It used to be known as KL Plaza, but the new owner wanted to rename the mall after a huge renovation. Fahrenheit88 has some very nice stores. At the top floor you find Signature IT, a huge IT department store. Fahrenheit88 became one of the places to be among locals because of the huge Uniqlo clothing shop that occupies a few floors.

7. 1Utama

1Utama shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Though pretty far away from Kuala Lumpur City Center, 1Utama is a not to be missed shopping mall. After the huge renovation it again it a wonderful place to shop for all kinds of products (and also one of the biggest). There is also a huge Foodrepublic food court, where you can try many local dishes. 1Utama is not really popular among tourists because of the distance from most of the tourist hotels; still it is very much worth a visit.

8. Sunway Pyramid

Sunway Pyramid shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Sunway Pyramid is extremely popular among locals that live outside of Kuala Lumpur. It could very well be the most popular mall in Malaysia when looking at absolute amount of monthly visitors. Sunway is more than a shopping mall; it is a huge entertainment complex with numerous bars, restaurants, hundreds of shops, hotels, resorts and even a huge amusement park (and water park). Those that travel with children will probably do them a huge favor by visiting Sunway Pyramid.

9. The Curve

The Curve shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

The Curve is neither the biggest nor the most popular mall in Kuala Lumpur. It is also located pretty far out of the city center. Still it is a nice place to visit. Besides the mall there are many bars and restaurants. Opposite the Curve is Ikano Power Center, where you can find a few flagship stores of popular local and foreign brands. The Curve is especially popular among the local expat community.

10. Berjaya Times Square

Berjaya Times Square shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Last in our list is Berjaya Times Square; the biggest shopping mall in Malaysia. It has well over 600 shops, ranging from huge stores at the lower levels to numerous small shops at the higher levels. There is even an indoor roller coaster inside this shopping, which makes it the perfect mall to visit if you are traveling with children. Berjaya Times Square is also located within the Bukit Bintang area; at a 10 minutes’ walk from Lot10 or Lowyat Plaza.

Other very popular malls in and around Kuala Lumpur

Malls that didn’t make it into our top10 are still very much worth a visit, especially the ones within the Golden Triangle (Bukit Bintang area and KLCC area). Below we listed a few other shopping malls and explained the main reasons you might have for visiting them.

11. Starhill Gallery: probably the most exclusive and luxurious mall in Kuala Lumpur.

12. Sungei Wang BB Plaza: together the most popular local malls in Kuala Lumpur.

13. AvenueK: modern but small shopping center opposite of Suria KLCC.

14. Pertama Complex: the best mall to buy sports products.

15. Bangsar Village Shopping Mall: very popular expat mall in one of the biggest expat enclaves.

16. IMBA Plaza: the best (or worst) place to buy pirated dvd’s, software and other media.

17. Great Eastern Mall: biggest mall in the Ampang area. Especially popular among expats.

18. Tropicana Mall: popular ‘family mall’. Many furniture and children stores.

19. Plaza Mont Kiara: modern mall catering to expats that live in the Mt. Kiara area.

20. Bangsar Shopping Center: most popular expat mall in the Bangsar area. Best place to buy products like cheese, bread and other typical western products.
