Enhancing Tourist Maps In Collaboration With Local Institutions

Kuching, Thursday – Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is in collaboration with Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak (PKS) to enhance the tourist maps for Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri through the Kenyalang Creative Map Competition (KCMC).

KCMC jointly organised by Land Surveyors Board Sarawak (LSBS), HERE Malaysia Sdn Bhd, The Association of Consulting Licensed Land Surveyors Sarawak (ACLS) and Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RSIM) aimed at giving students to be creative in producing maps.

KCMC was organised from August 1 to 31 and was opened to students from Polytechnics, universities and colleges in Malaysia. 73 maps submission were received from students of Ungku Omar Polytechnic (PUO), Ipoh; Geomatika College, Kuala Lumpur (IPTS); Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah Polytechnic (PTSB), Kulim; Merlimau Polytechnic (PMM), Melaka; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur Branch and two Sarawak’s Polytechnics – Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak (PKS) and Metro Betong Polytechnic, Sarawak.

Out of 73 maps received, 21 were Kuching maps, 10 Sibu, 13 Bintulu and 29 Miri maps.

A pre-selection was done last week by the panel of judges before the final round which was held last Wednesday.

Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak (PKS) won all the four categories for the Kuching, Sibu,  Bintulu and Miri maps. Each winning team took home RM600.00 in cash, plaque and certificate for each participant in the team.

The prizes were presented by Lt. Kol. Bersekutu (PA) Kamaludin Daud, Director of Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak (PKS).

The collaboration with PKS has given good opportunities for participating students to gain more knowledge about tourism products in Sarawak specifically in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

Identifying Potential Tourism Products For Promotion

Kuching, Friday – Sarawak Tourism Product Management team had organised six Sarawak Product Experience (SPE) trips throughout the State to identify and study potential tourism products in order to compile and share the information on  potentials for  promotion in its focus markets.

The  programme  organised by  Visitor’s Information Centres (VIC) in Miri, Kuching and Sibu aim to advise and help  product owners in positioning their products. It is also target customers effectively and to enhance visitors’ experience for a good value to their visits while in Sarawak.

The six products visited since early this year were heritage trails in the highland (Long Semadoh to Ba’kelalan), Iban animal tracking at Batang Ai, Maludam, Mukah, diving sites in Miri and Sarikei, the “fruits basket of Sarawak”.

“The team gain insightful knowledge through the SPEs and this also brings opportunity to meet the local product owners while exploring tourism opportunities in the potential areas.” said Maurice Balang the Manager – Product Management Corporate Relations of STB.

Maurice further mentioned that the team when in the field were given briefing by the product owner before experiencing the various products and advising on improvements to make it more marketable.

“Other of the identified products are in Long Semadoh, in the Lun Bawang highlands which include the paddy farms owned by the seven villages in the area and also the hanging bridge, Batu Narit and Tagang system at Long Lidung” Maurice added.

SPE is one of the strategic direction taken up by Sarawak Tourism to further provide the feedback from product owners to match it with the needs of tour operators.

Miri Hotels Made Strong Presence At Brunei Travel Fair

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Sunday – Four Miri based hotels made strong presence at the Brunei Travel Fair held during the weekend which was at International Convention Centre in Berakas, near here.

The 14th edition of the annual fair in Brunei saw participation by the Pullman Miri Waterfront, Imperial Group of Hotels, Jinhold Hotel Serviced Apartment and the Mega Hotel at the Sarawak Tourism Booth.

The Sarawak’s booth at the Travel Fair is coordinated by the Sarawak Tourism Board and it   provides platform for industry members in selling holiday packages targeting at expatriates as well as Bruneians for their short   getaways and weekend shopping.

“It is also aimed at the coming school holiday where parents  make decisions to plan  for the coming year-end school break  besides creating student interest on the Sarawak’s tourism products, events and festivals”,  said Gustino Basuan, Marketing Manager (ASEAN).

This organiser, Sabre Travel Network (Brunei) Sdn Bhd expected to see more than 13,000 visitors to the fair this year.

Besides hotels,  airlines, travel agents, national tourist offices and other travel related suppliers were  given the opportunity to promote and showcase their travel related products and services to the Bruneians.

For the first six months, the Brunei visitors’ arrival into Sarawak reached 935,356 a surged of 49.7 percent as compared to 624,970 in 2016.
