A lot has changed since my last trip to Labuan back in 2011. Not so long ago, this federal territory was known as an important offshore financial centre offering international financial services while serving as a base for giant offshore oil and gas (OG) companies. Back then, there were more business people rather than tourists.

Seven years later, I am back here again and I love seeing how this island has morphed into a more laidback, relaxing and fun-filled destination. It is now more of a tropical paradise where people converge to get that sun-kissed tan by the pristine beach and in the sea while experiencing year-long summer fling. Labuan is called “The Pearl of Borneo”, and its allure now extends beyond its strategic duty-free status and (OG) businesses.

My second visit to Labuan gave me an entirely different experience from the first, which I think is for the better.

Rusukan Besar Island

The underwater scenery is beautifully filled with corals and micro planktons. There are various tiny fishes swimming around the corals near the beach. Once in a while, snorkellers will be pleasantly surprised by the presence of black tip sharks and turtles.

For those who would like to stay overnight on the island, there are five units of A-shaped huts available for rent. A turtle conservation centre has been erected too especially after the authorities discovered that turtles land on Rusukan Besar, including the neighbouring Rusukan Kecil and Kuraman islands, to lay eggs.

Other activities that can be done on the island are kayaking, barbecuing, picnicking and sunbathing.

Parahu Larai

Riding on parahu larai – a newly-designed wooden outrigger canoes with sail – is a new addition to Labuan and totally recommended. The idea came from the traditional way the Kedayan-Bruneian people has been sailing across the sea. Parahu larai offers another way to enjoy an exhilarating sight-seeing experience in Labuan over water. One trip costs MYR15 per person for a 20-minute journey. The Little Big Club in Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park at Nusajaya, Johor.

We decided to visit The Little Big Club instead of Sanrio Hello Kitty Town because of my daughter prefer Barney than Hello Kitty. Anyway, it’s very much depends on the children…and this theme park is 100% design for children. 🙂

We watched most of the show (2nd floor) in the Theme Park, it was really fun and the children were really happy when they saw their childhood idols came up to the stage…

We spent almost 4-5 hours there until the theme park close at 6pm, the last show on stage was all the superstar! And I heard the children streaming too! Haha!

After the last show, you can take photos with your favorite characters one-by-one with your own camera and also their professional photographer in the theme park. But…it was only limited time, be hurry if you want to take photo with all the favorite characters in The Little Big Club.

It’s really a good theme park for family and children (age 3-12), where you can see the joyful moment and the non-stop laughter all the time! It was a priceless moment to me and my family! Worth the ticket prices!

Unless the children do not know the characters in the theme park, or else they will be very happy and enjoy themselves! Some of my friends asked me about the park…actually I shouldn’t be the one to rate the park, let the children do the talking! And their laughter in the park already proved how good the park is…

What truly makes a place special? Some might believe that distance actually improves the appeal of a destination – the harder it is to reach it, the more special it becomes. Others might stress on comparison, how different it is to their idea of normalcy – the more bizarre the culture, the more exotic the experience.


For me, it’s not the destination that matters – it’s the journey, and more importantly, the people. So when someone asks me what is so SPECIAL about Malaysia, my answer is simple and clear – its people.

And so, it is my pleasure to introduce a brand new initiative, courtesy of Moola, the first ever cash-back lifestyle programme, where we will feature a special breed of very interesting and engaging people – Malaysian bloggers.
