Zoo Negara, Revisited

If you went to school in the Klang Valley, a trip to the National Zoo would have been a must-do at least once in your primary school history. I went on my first visit in my final year in kindergarten, almost 40 years ago! Over the years, I have been back to the Zoo, even brought my daughter there once. We are planning another trip, but until that trip materialises, perhaps a refresher on its facilities will be good to know.

Zoo Negara was established in 1963 in Ampang, a town which is about 10-15 km away from the city of Kuala Lumpur. It has about 5,500 animals from over 400 species for you to discover. This place is a popular attraction for the locals with small children especially during the weekends and public holidays. Many parents with young children find it an educational place to bring their children.

If you have small children and prefer not to walk too much, there are trams available that you can take, which will take you round the zoo where it will stop halfway for you to get down and walk around. You can take the next tram once you are ready to go back to the starting point. The tickets can be purchased at the “Tram” counter once you are inside the zoo.

Other visitor facilities include :

  • a spacious air-conditioned Prayer Room
  • Free Public Wi-Fi at the Main Entrance, Show Amphitheatre and the Giant Panda Conservation Centre
  • Zoo Huts for you and your family to take a break
  • Locker rental at RM2.00 located near the Ticketing Counter.

  • Wheelchair rental at RM5.00, with a refundable RM50.00 deposit
  • Stroller rental at Information counter B, on first come first served basis, at RM20.00 with a refundable deposit of RM50.00
  • Umbrella rental at Information counter B, on first come first served basis, at RM5.00 with a refundable deposit of RM10.00

Zoo Negara is also looking to introduce a new ‘adopt an animal’ program for celebrities, which will hopefully create more awareness and perhaps some financial support for the animals.

Apart from these, Zoo Negara has also introduced various programs and packages for the public to engage and participate in:

International Museum Day

International Museum Day (IMD) is back again!

It is celebrated globally on 18 May annually, and on this day all museums waive their entrance fees to the public. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) comes up with a theme every year, and this year the theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”.

Museums around the world are invited to participate, and to promote the role of museums everywhere, creating fun and unique activities that the public can also participate in. The Department of Museums Malaysia also participates in this celebration, and every year, activities are carried out at selected museums to encourage public interaction and interest.

This year, as the 18th of May falls in the month of Ramadan, the main launching and celebration of International Museum Day in Malaysia will take place from 14 – 21 July 2019 at the Sabah Museum, organized by the Department of Museums Malaysia.

Speaking of museums, one would have probably visited, at the very least, the National Museum located along Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.

Did you know that within the same area, there are two other museums which you can visit, located within walking distance?

  1. The Malay World Ethnology Museum

This unique museum focuses on the  artistic traditions of the Malay community in Malaysia, featuring a captivating collection of traditional crafts, clothing, jewellery, weaponry and games.

  1. The Orang Asli Craft Museum

This ethnographic museum features the heritage and the culture of the Orang Asli of Malaysia. Besides learning about their way of life and beliefs, visitors can also view their carvings and weavings, which are imbued with deep intrinsic meaning.

Another museum which is easily missed when walking the touristic streets of Melaka, is the Architecture Museum.

  1. The Malaysia Architecture Museum, Melaka

This museum is the first architectural-themed museum in the country. It features Malaysia’s unique architectural heritage, from traditional Malay houses to fortifications, as well as palace, colonial, sacred and indigenous architectures.

Useful Tips When Visiting the KL International Book Fair (KLIBF2019)

Yes, it’s back!!

KLIBF 2019 (or PBAKL) is happening from March 29th until April 7th 2019 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC). Organised by the Ministry of Education , Malaysia through the National Book Council of Malaysia (MBKM), KLIBF is definitely one event well-awaited by die-hard fans!

Here, you get to meet your favourite novelist who wrote that book that had such a great impact in your life, and here is also where you get to witness book launching and various other activities including seminars, forums and conventions.

Needless to say, the crowd increases each year, and during peak times where writers make appearances and sign books is when general chaos takes place in most booths. Here are some simple tips recommended for you if you plan to make a visit this year:

  • Knowledge is POWER!

  1. DO your homework. Make a wish-list of all books and publishers you have had your eyes on. This helps you plan your way around the exhibition with the help of the layout plan which is available in the official website: https://www.klibf.my/index.php
  2. Take note of the times of special appearances, seminars and workshops so that you can include those you are interested to participate in.
  • Cash!

    1. Be prepared. You don’t want to get caught unawares, and have to rush off to the nearest ATM machine. Best to find out firsthand if debit or credit cards are accepted.
  • Crowd!

    1. This in inevitable! So, be sure to have plenty of patience and perseverance when going to exhibitions and fairs like these. If you are intent on getting your book signed, then just wait in line patiently. It is advisable to carry some snack bars in your bag, just in case you get the urge for some nibbles while standing in line.
  • Transport

    1. Before you decide to self-drive, weigh down the pros and con. Ease of parking, traffic congestion and parking fees (which tend to be exorbitant!). It may be more convenient to take public transportation, but be sure to also consider the weight you will be carrying when you head back home.
  • Bag

    1. Very important! Backpacks are highly recommended due to the weight distribution of the books you will be lugging around.
  • Kids

  1. Really? Seriously?? NOT advisable if going to fairs like this. If you absolutely have to, then aim to go early morning, as soon as the fair opens, on a weekday. Otherwise, consider finding a sitter! At least you can browse with peace of mind, and not be rushed with a grumpy child (or two, or three!) in your hands!
