NextLastMalacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam MALACCA: The biggest mixed-development project in the state, which will see the birth of uniquely themed icons that will change the landscape of the Historical City, was launched here on Saturday

The RM2 billion Hatten City project in Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz in Banda Hilir was launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

The development will be undertaken by Singapore-based Hatten Group.

With a gross area of eight million square feet in an eight-hectare plot, the project will also feature the tallest building in the state, 45-storey high with a 360-degree viewing sky deck.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Ali said the biggest real estate project in the state would combine heritage and futuristic elements.

“The Hatten City is poised to be the state’s most iconic development that portrays futuristic and chic innovations, injects fun, excitement and vibrancy.

“The mixed-development project comprises retail units, residences (condominiums), international hotels, office tower, resort and shopping complex,” he said.

Also present were Hatten Group chairman Datuk Eric Tan Eng Huat, chief executive officer Edwin Tan Ping Huang and managing director Colin Tan Juen Teng.

Hatten City is the third development project for the Hatten Group, which is known for its development of the Dataran Pahlawan shopping mall that draws millions of visitors each year.

“This new icon, which is expected to be completed in the next eight years in two parcels, will transform Malacca,” said Juen Teng.

“Parcel I, which rests on two hectares, will include the Elements mall which will share the same building with two international hotel chains.

“This parcel is further made extravagant with Silverscape, the highest condominium towers with 45 storeys in the heart of the city and facing the Straits of Malacca,” said Juen Teng.

Work on the Elements mall will begin this year and be completed in three years.

“It will be a mix of our past heritage and high fashion, where the dramatic history of Malacca is tastefully recreated for our convenience.

“You can walk down the ‘Time Tunnel’ and indulge in 500 years of history of the state, all in cool comfort and ambience, while bringing you back to the past with the many mini replicas of famous historical sites such as Stadhuys, A Famosa and also the well sought after diversified cultural displays of the Baba Nyonya, Portuguese, Malays, Chinese and Indians.

“Elements mall is an inspiring blend of retail and recreation, comprises eight retail floors, with each floor dedicated to a particular segment of fashion or arts and crafts.

“Elements is inspired by the famous Korean fashion hubs concept, Dongdaemun and Namdaemun, and offers high fashion concepts, housing both local and international brands, spanning five levels from the ground floor with 830 retail units.”

On Silverscape, Juen Teng said the high-end residence that occupies two of the four tower blocks that make up Parcel I, offered luxury living fronting the sea.

“Spacious yet intimate, each unit at Silverscape beckons with concept and style. Silverscape sits directly above the Elements mall, towering over the Malacca city centre and rises to the pinnacle.

As for Parcel II, which will sit on 4.7ha of reclaimed land, Juen Teng said it promises breathtaking premium sea front living condominiums and private villas with a contemporary business zone to combine work and play.

“Parcel II would also be complemented with Troadwalle, a luxury shopping haven for premium fashion brands from across the globe and Malacca’s very first open sky deck clubhouse.

“This would truly be the only one place where you can unwind, indulge, explore, invest and grow,” he said, adding that work on Parcel II would start in 2014 and would be completed by 2019.

MALACCA: The state’s tourism sector will receive a shot in the arm with the construction of two new hotels — Hilton Hotel and All Seasons Hotel.

The developer of both the hotels, Hatten Group CEO Datuk Eric Tan, said a 1,100-unit apartment block and a commercial centre would also be built.

“The tallest building in Malacca will be built under this project.

“With 43 storeys, the building will change the landscape of Melaka Raya and the Malacca coastline.

“The project will be developed next to the Harbour Club in Melaka Raya and will involve an investment of RM300 million,” he said.

Tan said the Hilton Hotel, a five-star establishment, would have 250 rooms while the All Seasons Hotel, a two-star hotel, would have 350 rooms.

“The two hotels and the service apartments will provide Malacca with an additional 1,700 rooms,” Tan said, in a briefing session with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam at the Hatten Square.

Tan said the groundbreaking ceremony for the hotels would be performed in December.

He said the project would be completed in five years and would provide job opportunities to about 3,000 people.

Meanwhile, Tan also announced that the 700-room Hatten Hotel would open its doors in September next year.

The chief minister said the state’s tourism sector was picking up.

Ali said some eight million tourists were expected to visit the historical city this year, up from 7.5 million last year.

“We need more hotel rooms in the state. With the opening of Hilton and All Seasons we will be able to ensure that visitors have a better choice of accommodation,” he said.

Ali said work to widen Jalan Merdeka, opposite Dataran Pahlawan, from the two lanes to five lanes, would be complete in two months.

“Once completed, the 2km stretch from Menara Taming Sari up to Hatten Square would be known as Pahlawan City,” he said.

TOO MANY PROJECTS IN BANDAR HILIR CHOKING MELALA

MALACCA is a fast developing state with its own historic attractions.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has taken Malacca to greater heights.

Over the years, new museums have been opened and many projects to attract more visitors and foreign investment have either been completed or are in the midst of completion.

However, excessive land reclamation, including the man-made island of Pulau Melaka, is of concern.

One can see how far away the sea now with land reclamation from Padang Pahlawan right up to Mahkota Parade and Melaka Raya.

It will not be a surprise if reclamation proceeds further in the name of development.

Is inspection conducted on a regular basis by the state government on buildings built on reclaimed land to ensure their safety and the safety of the public?

Whether there will be underground soil movement or erosion, or water movement that may cause harm in future has yet to be established.

Malacca’s proximity to Sumatra and possible impact from earthquakes is also cause for concern.

The Pulau Melaka project is ongoing, and the state government has decided to erect a 85m tall ferris wheel from China on it.

Again, the issue that needs to be addressed is the safety of the public.

During weekends, public holidays and school holidays, traffic is very heavy especially on the roads leading to Padang Pahlawan, Mahkota Parade, Jalan Bendahara, Jonker Walk and Jalan Bunga Raya.

To make it worse, Majlis Perbandaran Melaka inposes charges for parking during the weekends, too.

This does not help Malaccans who wish to spend quality time with their families and children.

Malacca also needs to improve its transportation system to complement the current town buses, taxis etc.

Malacca needs a light rail train (LRT) system to reduce the number of cars on the road during weekends.

I hope the state government takes into consideration our concerns before embarking on projects centred at one common area such as Mahkota Parade and Melaka Raya which may benefit the state but bring hardship to Malaccans.

MALAYSIA EYE TO BE READY BY DECEMBER 2011

Malacca to get bigger Ferris wheel

MALACCA: A new Ferris wheel, bigger than the Eyes on Malaysia, will rise again in the historical city here.

The wheel, to be called Malaysia Eye, will stand 88m high and comprise 54 air-conditioned gondolas.

It will be able to ferry six people in a gondola for a 16-minute ride.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said Malaysia Eye would begin operating on Dec 1 with a 324- passenger capacity.

“The the cost of bringing Malaysia Eye from China and the construction of a park along with it is RM30 million.

“It would not be located in Kota Laksamana, but in Pulau Melaka,” he said, adding that locating the new Ferris wheel on the Eyes on Malaysia site would have implications as it was taller and the project would have to be approved by Unesco because of its World Heritage Sites status.

Ali said the Malaysia Eye project would be handled by The Eye Sdn Bhd.

He said the Malaysia Eye would be better and bigger than the Eyes On Malaysia which closed down due to a dispute between its owners, Fitraco NV of Belgium and MST Ad Suria Sdn Bhd and Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the company leasing the Ferris wheel.

Besides the new Ferris wheel, Ali said the Pulau Melaka area would also see the development of an Arab city, hotels and apartments.

“We will also have a 1,000-room hotel near Pulau Melaka, which will be developed by the Hatten Group.

“The Malaysia Eye and other attractions in this area, especially the soon-to-be opened Sea Lion Park, are set to be the latest tourist attractions,” he added.
