Identifying Potential Tourism Products For Promotion

Kuching, Friday – Sarawak Tourism Product Management team had organised six Sarawak Product Experience (SPE) trips throughout the State to identify and study potential tourism products in order to compile and share the information on  potentials for  promotion in its focus markets.

The  programme  organised by  Visitor’s Information Centres (VIC) in Miri, Kuching and Sibu aim to advise and help  product owners in positioning their products. It is also target customers effectively and to enhance visitors’ experience for a good value to their visits while in Sarawak.

The six products visited since early this year were heritage trails in the highland (Long Semadoh to Ba’kelalan), Iban animal tracking at Batang Ai, Maludam, Mukah, diving sites in Miri and Sarikei, the “fruits basket of Sarawak”.

“The team gain insightful knowledge through the SPEs and this also brings opportunity to meet the local product owners while exploring tourism opportunities in the potential areas.” said Maurice Balang the Manager – Product Management Corporate Relations of STB.

Maurice further mentioned that the team when in the field were given briefing by the product owner before experiencing the various products and advising on improvements to make it more marketable.

“Other of the identified products are in Long Semadoh, in the Lun Bawang highlands which include the paddy farms owned by the seven villages in the area and also the hanging bridge, Batu Narit and Tagang system at Long Lidung” Maurice added.

SPE is one of the strategic direction taken up by Sarawak Tourism to further provide the feedback from product owners to match it with the needs of tour operators.

Miri Hotels Made Strong Presence At Brunei Travel Fair

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Sunday – Four Miri based hotels made strong presence at the Brunei Travel Fair held during the weekend which was at International Convention Centre in Berakas, near here.

The 14th edition of the annual fair in Brunei saw participation by the Pullman Miri Waterfront, Imperial Group of Hotels, Jinhold Hotel Serviced Apartment and the Mega Hotel at the Sarawak Tourism Booth.

The Sarawak’s booth at the Travel Fair is coordinated by the Sarawak Tourism Board and it   provides platform for industry members in selling holiday packages targeting at expatriates as well as Bruneians for their short   getaways and weekend shopping.

“It is also aimed at the coming school holiday where parents  make decisions to plan  for the coming year-end school break  besides creating student interest on the Sarawak’s tourism products, events and festivals”,  said Gustino Basuan, Marketing Manager (ASEAN).

This organiser, Sabre Travel Network (Brunei) Sdn Bhd expected to see more than 13,000 visitors to the fair this year.

Besides hotels,  airlines, travel agents, national tourist offices and other travel related suppliers were  given the opportunity to promote and showcase their travel related products and services to the Bruneians.

For the first six months, the Brunei visitors’ arrival into Sarawak reached 935,356 a surged of 49.7 percent as compared to 624,970 in 2016.

Got A Yearning For Free Music Lessons?

KUCHING, Tuesday – The Borneo Jazz “Outreach Programme,” a free music learning session, is back by popular demand and will be held over the festival weekend at ParkCity Everly Hotel, Miri.

The Programme is held on the Borneo Jazz festival days and provides aspiring musicians with teaching sessions led by professional performers, some of them veterans in mentoring the younger generation.

On Friday, May 12, the class called “Make Me Hip” teaches contemporary keyboard at 2.00pm to 3.30pm led by James Boyle of ‘Akademi Seni Budaya Dan Warisan Kebangsaan’ (ASWARA) College. The drumkit and percussions concert clinic, “I Got Rhythm!” will be at 4.00pm to 5.30pm on the same day, led by CaboCuba Jazz’s Nils Fisher and Armando Vidal.

On May 13, the class on improvising at the keyboard, “I Want To Break Free” is at 9.30am to 11.00am led by Michael Veerapen from the Michael Simon’s Asian Connection. The final class on brass instrument technique and tone production, “Blow Your Horn!” will be at 11.30am to 1.00pm and is led by Michael Simon and Terry Hsieh from Michael Simon Asian’s Connection.

The Programme was launched last year with one session on keyboard, and received great response from the public. Sarawak Tourism has decided to expand it further to incorporate a wider range of instruments.

It is also part of Borneo Jazz’s goal to not only promote the appreciation of music, but also encourage and further enhance the technical skills of local aspiring musicians especially the young.

Sarawak Tourism Board At ASEAN Travel Forum

KUCHING, Friday – The Sarawak Tourism Board is participating in the 36th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) for the Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) event being held in Singapore on January 18 to 20.

ATF is a regional cooperative effort between ASEAN countries held annually to build and strengthen relations between the different sectors in the ASEAN tourism industry, as well as attract more tourists from non-ASEAN countries.

TRAVEX is the longest running ASEAN leisure travel trade event, providing an opportunity for 1600 delegates with 500 exhibitions to present their tourism products and services to the potential buyers and industry key players.

The interconnectivity of ASEAN-member countries creates a unique marketing advantage in packaging and promoting tourism to outside countries, and TRAVEX embraces that advantage.

The Board is attending and representing Sarawak with tour information and packages from different tour agencies throughout Sarawak.

With a business-to-business appointment structure, providing 15-minute appointment between buyers and sellers, the Board will be providing appointments for industry partners during TRAVEX such as Merdeka Palace Hotel Suites, Kuching Holidays Car Rental and Minda Nusantara Tours Travel Agencies, Miri.

The Board hopes to take this opportunity to open new networking opportunities, maintain old ones, as well as gain insight on the future of ASEAN tourism as a whole.

As one of the oldest and well-established tour and travel forums in the region, the Board considers the ATF and all its facets as an important Trade Fair for 2017.
