Ratatouille La Gourmet – Tea room – Bar

Ratatouille La Gourmet (N1.54783 E103.74606) is located at the corner lot of Jalan Adda 3/1 in Adda Heights, Johor Bahru.
Few months ago, Ratatouille was a stall in one of the food court situated in Taman Setia Indah. After several months of hardwork and effort by Chef Brian and the team, they successfully upgraded from a small stall to the well known restaurant in Johor Bahru today.
I admired their achievement!

Ratatouille selected the white English theme as one of their attraction of the restaurant, it’s also became the ‘first’ theme’s restaurant in my favorite list.
The restaurant provide a clean and tidy outlook which really impressed! On the right side, there are some dining table for those customers who prefer natural air without air-conditioning.

The signature cheese cake was rich with cheese but not overly sweet. Aromatic tiramisu was a favorite dessert for most of the customer in the area. Lemon sugar pancake was a surprise where the pancake doesn’t overly sweet and nice to have. According to the owner – Sherman, the Ratatouille Apple pie has a strong demand from the local, the special apple pie really filling after the main course.

The Ratatouille restaurant is also a perfect place for afternoon tea break with some cakes or scones, because of the special assign ‘Hi-tea’ area.

We will make our effort to drop by Ratatouille La Gourmet every now and then, not just only pass-by Adda Heights area. It is a excellent restaurant for lunch, tea break and dinner, even enjoy some beers in the evening.

Specially thanks to Brian and Sherman for the warm hospitality.

Flamingo Hotel By The Beach

flamingo-hotel-by-the-beach-penang-1

Flamingo Hotel By The Beach (formerly known as the Crown Prince Hotel and as the Crown Jewel Hotel) is located in a place called Tanjung Bungah in the northern part of the island Penang. It’s situated between the capital of Georgetown and the well-known seaside resort of Batu Ferringhi. By taxi, it takes about 10-15 minutes coming down from Georgetown. In front of the hotel you’ll have taxis waiting, but you could also take the free shuttle bus which the hotel provides you in order to go to the city center of Georgetown, and to Batu Ferringhi (for the evening market).

It is a well affordable 4-star hotel. The rooms is big and especially those with a view of the sea are beautiful. There is a nice pool, as well as a magnificent beach. As it usual is, the sea in front of the hotel isn’t really good to swim in, but the pool makes up for it. There is a nice terrace at the sea, from which you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. The entire hotel is provided with free Wi-Fi.

The town of Tanjung Bangah isn’t really a tourist attraction, but in the last couple of years this has been developed pretty quickly. You have a food court, with about 20 little diners. Besides that there is a bank with an ATM, a 7-Eleven supermarket and a few tiny restaurants and bars. In front of the hotel you can take a taxi to Georgetown or Batu Ferringhi.

Ratatouille La Gourmet, A Hidden Gem at Tmn Setia Indah, Johor Bahru

Ratatouille La Gourmet (N1.57163 E103.75767) is my first dining experience that enjoying such a good quality western cuisine at a very simple ‘Kopitiam’. It’s actually a stall in one of the Chinese kopitiam (aka small food court) named ‘Fu Sing Kopitiam’ and serving nice + delicious food. Thanks for the friend’s recommendation from Facebook.

We were there around 6pm on the Sunday evening, the Chef Brian politely introduced the series of western cuisines that serve by Ratatouille La Gourmet to us. After about 15-20 minutes, the first salad served on table – Caesar Salad.

 photo IMG_2371_zps82b3581b.jpg

That was the first appetizer for us and the presentation was nice, taste not bad.

Followed by second appetizers – Foie gras, some of us just cannot believe it because we were enjoying a nice Foie gras in a ‘Kopitiam’…

 photo IMG_2375_zps2bdd30b4.jpg

This was my first time in my life having Foie gras in kopitiam too! What a experience!

 photo IMG_2379_zps0b21b9da.jpg

The Foie gras was well prepared and served with some mushroom slices and piece of bread, the bite will bring some mild alcohol fragrance…excellent! The dish above is selling with a affordable price (RM38) for everyone to be able to try it.

The third appetizers – Escargot.
Escargot is a dish of cooked land snails, usually served as an
appetizer in France and in French restaurants. The word escargot is also
sometimes applied to the living snails of those species which are
commonly eaten in this way.
Source from Wiki.

 photo IMG_2377_zpsdff2cb39.jpg

Another experience that having this French cuisine in ‘kopitiam’ again!
The escargots were served in 6 per order (RM18), I’m not in the position to say about the taste because I don’t really have much experience having it, but…actually they were acceptable and nice!

Next was the Spaghetti Bolognaise.
As for the Italian authentic ingredients including pancetta, carrots, celery, onions, tomato paste and a dash of wine, and the key ingredient is minced beef. This spaghetti did all right except I didn’t taste the wine…maybe it was my mouth problem. 🙂
The rich minced beef and the tomato sauce were really made our mouth can’t stop until the spaghetti is finished. (RM11)

 photo IMG_2382_zps42115bd8.jpg

Anyway, it is a light and fast meal you should try if you visit Ratatouille La Gourmet.

By having the dishes above, Chef Brian served us two different type of soup – Mushroom soup and Clam chowder to let us have a break before continue our extraordinary dinner.

 photo IMG_2385_zps1b35b4b8.jpg

 photo IMG_2387_zpsd3d55f8a.jpg

The clams were fresh and the soup was rich flavor but not starchy at all. Their mushroom soup was another great version compare with others, fresh mushrooms and rich. Again, not starchy. We like the both soup.

Here come the first main course – Grilled Salmon with pumpkin sauce.

 photo IMG_2389_zps0cde24c1.jpg

The grilled salmon served with pumpkin sauce, broccoli and Ratatouille.

 photo IMG_2392_zps7205817f.jpg

The combination was excellent! The grilled salmon was well grilled to perfection! This was another different experience to savor the dish.

Another main course – Crusted Roasted Rack of Lamb.

 photo IMG_2396_zpsa5526e57.jpg

The rack of lamb were served in the medium doneness, succulent and juicy! The dish was served with Ratatouille, broccoli and mashed potatoes. We like the crusted outer layer of the lamb which was mixture of herbs and pine nuts that really brought us a new taste of the dish! The bite had give us a different layer of enjoyment, awesome!

 photo IMG_2394_zps9375b39d.jpg

 photo IMG_2397_zps57a8d5ec.jpg

The last main course was the US Black Angus Ribeye steak.

I had a chat with the Chef – Brian Soon, understand that he’s still working in one of the 4 star restaurant in Singapore right now…and only available at the stall during Wednesday, Saturday Sunday. Thursday and Friday’s duty will be handle by his wife. According to him, he’ll be full time at Ratatouille few months later within this year.

 photo IMG_2411_zpsdd47a1de.jpg

Brian said, he wanted to introduce the nice and quality western cuisines to the public with a affordable price, and he’ll try his best to educate the local on the various dishes serve by Ratatouille La Gourmet.

The stall is operating by Chef Brian and his partner Mr Sherman, both of them are good friends since teenage until now and they are from Malacca. That is also one of the reason that the wordings at the stall has some Malaccan style on it, can you feel it?

 photo IMG_2409_zpseb3fa48f.jpg

They also provide catering and private chef services to your house for private function. Do contact them from the email address below if you need it.

 photo IMG_2414_zpsc09e0158.jpg

This will be one of my regular place for western cuisine. The prices are very reasonable and affordable, beside that I also tasted the quality ingredients provided by the Chef.
Do drop by if you happen in the area, I believe you will be surprise by the dishes serve by Ratatouille.

Century Curry Fish Head ???????? at Cedar Point Hawker Center ?????, Century Garden

The Century Curry Fish Head ???????? (N1.48126 E103.76296) stall is located in Cedar Point Hawker Center of Century Garden – Johor Bahru. The hawker center is easy to locate cause just behind the Grand Paragon Hotel of JB, and it’s getting crowded mostly in the evening time, you can find most of the Johor Bahru local delights within…

 photo 15-cedarpointcurry-01_zpsd8f9fad2.jpg

We chose the popular Century clay pot curry fish head for our dinner. The ‘Chinese’ style curry fish head serve in small, medium and large size with different prices. The small size clay pot we had cost RM25 each, reasonable price.

 photo 15-cedarpointcurry-02_zps092ce858.jpg

The piping hot curry fish head served on our table in about 10 minutes and nice aroma of the curry wafts around our table once the clay pot lid is lifted. Few ingredients are used to preparing the dish, young lady’s fingers and tomatoes are added to the curry, garnished with plenty of Tau-pok (fried bean-curd). The flavorful curry was cooked with the perfect balanced of curry and coconut milk, and it was not really spicy but with the right amount of tang.
The flesh was tender and moist, the fish bones dislocate easily while putting into my mouth, goes with the distinct taste of curry leaf, we all had the second plate of rice! The amount serve for the small size of fish head is enough to serve up to 3 persons which are not a big eater.

Beside the clay pot curry, we also ordered the Tampoi popular ‘pork satay’ and ‘fried oyster’ from the food court. The slight charred satay sticks was taste average and acceptable with the peanuts sauce, all BBQ with nice honey.

 photo IMG_9579_zpsc2e1b175.jpg

The fried oyster omelette was average, the normal size of fresh oysters remain juicy while it served in this eggy flavor omelette. It could be better if they balance the starch and the eggs, and provide slightly big size of oysters. I don’t mind paying more…

 photo IMG_9583_zpsd7eaecc4.jpg

The hawker center is my favorite food court since the 80s. It has many delicious foods since those day until now, do discover yourself and you may find the food you like. 🙂
