RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FEST PROMOTIONAL VIDEO WINS GOLDEN CITY GATE AWARD

The Rainforest World Music Festival’s (RWMF) promotional video wins the Golden City Gate 2019 five-star Award at the ITB Berlin 2019, a leading international annual tourism trade event.

The video, “Rainforest World Music Festival” produced by a local production house, Asa Esa won in the 19th International Tourism Film and Multimedia category with a five star for an outstanding contribution.

On hand to receive the award from the President of Golden City Gate, Wolfgang Jo Huschert was the Minister for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at a ceremony held at the Malaysian Pavilion at the Messe Berlin here yesterday.

Present at the presentation ceremony were the Assistant Minister for Tourism, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Chairman of STB, Datuk Haji Abdul Wahab Aziz and the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Hii Chang Kee.

Held for the 19th time the award’s jury session was held on February 12, 2019 with more than 100 entries from 21 countries received for the competition.

The elated STB’s Chief Executive Officer, Sharazede Datu Haji Salleh Askor said it was a big honour to be bestowed the prestigious award.

“We will be celebrating the festival’s 22nd edition in 2019 and we hope that the award will be an inspiration for us to move on to make the festival bigger and better this year” she added.

The making of the two-minute promotional video “Awakening of the Rainforest” was inspired Mother Nature’s bountiful gift.

The Award was initiated in 2001 by the filmmaker Wolfgang Jo Huschert and started – back then – with five touristic films from three countries in the former ITB-Cinema.

Three Nordic Travel Agencies to Partner STB to Promote Sarawak

Helsinki (Finland), Monday: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has secured three Nordic partners to spearhead its marketing campaign for the year at the MATKA Nordic Travel Fair which ended here yesterday.

It was indeed a fruitful outing and we secured among the best Nordic travel agencies to work with us and we hope to partner them to drive our campaign, said the elated STB’s Chief Executive Officer, Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor.

“We had fruitful engagements with Finland’s Olympia Air Travel Limited, Helsinki based Adventura Tour Operator Ltd, and Copenhagen based Malaysia Experten and we will be doing follow up with these region’s leading operators”

“For a start, familiarisation trips for their product managers will be the first step to introduce the State’s Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festival’s product experiences”

“This is STB’s first foray into MATKA Nordic Travel Fair, and we find that there is great potential in this market as there is a match between the products that they are looking for and what we have to offer in Sarawak”, said Sharzede.

The three Nordic partners will be sending tour groups as early as next month for at least five to seven days tours in Sarawak and are currently selling tours with a departures also schedule in April.

Describing Sarawak as a favourite destination for those 50’s and above, Liisa Puolkkainen, Olympia Air Travel’s Product Manager, expressed confidence that Sarawak will continue to attract travellers from the Nordic countries particularly Finland where most of her clients look for nature and culture as their top choice in deciding their holiday destination.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Experten Business Development Manager, Charlotte Sandakumaran was of the opinion that Sarawak is a family destination for travellers from the Nordic region.

“My 15 years’ experience and having sold many Malaysia packages, Sarawak definitely captures interest of families as a safe and family friendly destination”, she opined.

Kuching based Ecogreen Holidays Director, Gary Speldewinde had high hopes for the Nordic market adding that MATKA Nordic Travel Fair was a good platform in educating Finnish travellers about the destination and the tours available.

“We have interests from 10 free independent travellers who were keen on Sarawak product experiences and we hope to be able to convince them of their choices and prepare them for their holidays” he added.

The annual Fair started on January 17 with the first day dedicated to trade visitors while the next three subsequent days were opened to members of the public.

Melaka Taming Sari Tower Lures 3.3 Million Visitors Within Five Years

MELAKA, June 15 (Bernama) — The Melaka Taming Sari Tower here has managed to lure 3.3 million visitors with ticket collection totalling RM29.9 million over the first five years of its operation.

Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said it was an increase of 0.8 million visitors from the original target set when it was first opened in April 2008.

Over the first five months this year alone, a total of 227,107 visitors with ticket collection of RM2.4 million were recorded, he said.

He said it was an overwhelming achievement, and hence proved the determination of the management of Melaka Taming Sari Berhad (MTSB) in turning the 110m tall tower worth RM24 million into Melaka’s popular tourism product.

“We believe that this tourist product can contribute to the more developed and competitive eco-tourism industry,” he said after opening the 5th anniversary celebration of the tower here today.

Also present were MTSB chairman Datuk Mat Sirat Abu and chief executive officer Mazary Ahmad.

Idris said MTSB would also introduce a new tourism product soon, that is a ‘reverse bungee’, in a bid to diversify the tourism products at the tower.

However, he said the reverse bungee facility, which is expected to be built at the end of this year, must get prior approval from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) as it would be built on one of the world’s heritage site.

“It is still at the discussion stage and we will seek advice and consultancy from the supplier and Unesco about the suitability of the location and height,” he said.

At the event, Idris also launched the book published by MTSB titled ‘Heritage Trail Melaka Mosques’, which showcases the beauty of mosque architecture in Melaka, including at the Selat Mosque, Tengkera Mosque and Al-Azim Mosque.

Taking arts to Malacca streets

THE largest and only site specific art and performance festival on a Unesco heritage site returns to Malacca for the fourth time from tomorrow to Sunday.

The Melaka Art And Performance Festival or Mapfest 2012, held daily at 10am, has performances by more than 50 local and international artistes from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, France, Ghana, South Korea, Ireland, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Morocco, Canada, Poland and the United States.
They will perform on the streets along St Paul’s Hill and the asphalt will become their canvas.

Mapfest 2012 draws from Malacca’s famous heritage sites to create a space for contemporary culture and artistic practice. It will have components such as Cerita Pendek (Short Stories) 1 and 2, visual arts, discussions and workshops.
Cerita Pendek brings together dance, music and performances from all participating artistes in short works over two nights at St Paul’s Church.

On Sunday night, they will all perform Eulogy For The Living, a spectacular finale directed by Tony Yap and accompanied by live music, and projections by Khaled Sabsabi.
Producer Andrew Ching says: “The festival provides an avenue for up-coming performers to showcase their talents and collaborate with international artistes.”

Festival supporter the Malaysia Convention And Exhibition Bureau chief executive officer Zulkefli Sharif says that as a heritage site, Malacca has always been a popular tourist attraction and the festival enhances its offerings.

 
The event is set to attract more than 4,000 international attendees who can join a dance workshop by Australia’s leading dancer Appiah Annan of Asanti Dance Theatre who will introduce traditional and contemporary approaches to dance from his motherland, Ghana.

Mapfest 2012 is produced by Arts And Performance Festival Melaka and is supported by the Tourism Ministry, E-Plus Entertainment, Mercatus Plus, Badan Warisan Malaysia and the governments of the Netherlands, Australia and France among others.
