Penang Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration

Penang has been promoting its living heritage in the recent years by organising cultural events during major celebrations. In conjunction with the Chinese New Year which falls on 23rd and 24th January 2012, the Penang state government, Penang Chinese Clan Council and the Penang Clan Associations Youth Committee will be organising a fun-filled cultural event on 29th January 2012. The Penang Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration will take place in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage site from 3.00 pm until midnight that day. Some of the streets that will be involved in this grand cultural showcase will include Armenian Street, Chulia Street, Acheen Street and Kampung Kolam.

The Penang Chinese New Year Cultural and Heritage Celebration will be held at the Unesco Heritage Site on 29th January 2012

Visitors to this cultural celebration can expect to see all sorts of exciting cultural activities as well as traditional games and cultural exhibitions. There will also be lion dance performances, a treasure hunt, human chess contest and various other activities. There will also be cooking demonstrations and food tasting of traditional Chinese food. This event is set to attract more than 100,000 visitors as it managed to attract that amount of visitors last year despite the rain.

Visitors can also find out more about the history of Chinese clans, festivals, medicine, martial arts, handicraft and also baba nyonya culture.
