Dennis Lau & Shawn Lee @ Mystical Eve

December 20, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Dennis released his maiden album in November 2010, and his album was composed and produced solely by him and featured compositions that amalgamated jazz, pop and the classics. His latest record effort, Unity of Arts, with local beatboxer Shawn Lee, enmeshes funky hip hop beats with black-suit classicism. He calls the collaboration, on which he plays the violin against Lee’s thumping mouth-music, a pure, accidental experiment.

“We met at an event late last year and just decided to start jamming here one night. It drove the neighbours crazy but we figured we could really do collaboration from then,” recalled Lau.

The animated 26-year-old, who also heads his entertainment companies, Mosaic Music Entertainment and Mosaic Movie Productions, adds that he has a penchant for mixing the classical violin with contemporary elements. “I like to experiment with different genres just to see what happens. I think that experimentation is the key to evolution. My collaboration with Shawn also features this group of street-dancers called the Wakaka crew. I think it’s something really different from what has been done. It also introduces how hip hop and classical music can come together,” he explained.

Meet this dynamic duo as they countdown to 2012 at ENCORP Strand!

Melaka Bird Park To Emulate Singapore’s Success – Mohd Ali

From Nasarudin Omar

SINGAPORE, Dec 18 (Bernama) — The Melaka Government wants the Melaka Bird Park, currently under construction, to emulate the success achieved by the management of the Jurong Bird Park here.

Singing praises of the republic’s bird park which has the largest number and species of birds in the world, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.

“I am fascinated by its natural background, as well as the upgrades made on the bird park over the years.

“This will be a good example for the Melaka Government (to follow).

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after a three-hour visit to the bird park which was opened to the public on Jan 3, 1971, Mohd Ali was given a briefing by Wildlife Reserves Singapore Chief Executive Officer Isabella Loh and Jurong Bird Park General Manager R. Raja Segran.

The Melaka Bird Park will house 300 species on a 1.8 hectare of land in Taman Botanikal, Ayer Keroh, when it is set up by early 2013.

This new tourism product of Melaka is part of the second phase of a landscape and tourism facilities development project spanning 92.5 hectares in Melaka’s Botanical Park.

Mohd Ali said Melaka would work with the management of the Jurong Bird Park which had maintained its popularity among tourists since it began operating about 40 years ago.

“I am amused by the performance of a parrot here which can speak in several languages, as well as a scarlet macaw (another parrot species) which is able to fly to deliever a written message,” he added.

The chief minister said Melaka was also interested in buying the bird park’s monorail, which runs 1.72km, for installation at the botanical park.

“We will see if the monorail is suitable for use,” said Mohd Ali, who was informed by Isabella that the Jurong Bird Park monorail would be replaced with a tram.

Najwa @ Mystical Eve

December 19, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Since 2009, Najwa Mahiaddin (Najwa) has worked hard to establish herself – gigging at open mic nights, collaborating with contemporaries (her memorable Malam Nada Biru concert with Yuna) and gradually moving on to standalone shows with her band, Thing One, last year. It’s no exaggeration that she has given the local RB genre a presence in the singer-songwriter scene filled with indie and folk acts.

See Najwa live on New Year’s Eve at ENCORP Strand!

Her past works include a string of collaborations with local hip hop maverick Malique (ex-Too Phat) on tracks like Kau Yang Punya and Senyum and with all-girl supergroup The Ramlees featuring Yuna, Liyana Fizi and Mira (of Tilu) on Itulah Sayang, a track off Astro and XFM’s P. Ramlee … Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti: Satu Indiepretasi compilation album.

Local RB artiste Najwa

Now with her debut album, Innocent Soul, the plucky debutante with alluring appeal hopes to popularise the eclectic sounds of neo-soul in Malaysia. “Neo-soul is a combination of jazz, funk, hip hop and pop and it’s something that is still quite new here,” she said. “There weren’t that many soul idols around when I was a child. I grew up listening to the likes of Billie Holiday and Jill Scott. They’re some of my all-time favourites.”

Reza Salleh @ Mystical Eve

December 18, 2011 at 12:00 pm

As a budding singer-songwriter during his college days in Melbourne, Australia, Reza Salleh would rise above his fears and perform his music at live shows where critical audiences can be wittingly fierce with their judgement. That fellow Malaysian students who were in Melbourne at the time would testify that “even Aussie kids knew the lyrics to his songs” suggests real talent and an innate skill for showmanship in Reza Salleh. Years later in Kuala Lumpur, he would be one of the top names in the independent singer–songwriter scene.

Catch this talented musician-songwriter at ENCORP Strand on 31st December!

Reza’s early song–writing days were inspired by popular grunge and alternative rock bands like Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine, and the vocal styles of African-American artists. And perhaps due to the combination of inherent stubbornness and love for all kinds of music, the music he produced was not limited to any particular genre or tone. His inaugural album, Realize, captures perfectly his musical range and adaptability.

With punchy rock ensembles and acoustic bossa nova lining his track list, it would be difficult to pin him down to a particular genre. Though this may frustrate some straight–jacket listeners, Reza’s ability to swing between genres is an invaluable asset for any young musician catering to an increasingly diverse audience that is constantly on the lookout for new sounds.

Reza’s inaugural album, Realize, which compiles original music written over ten years of his song–writing career, is a tribute to fellow independent musicians who have taken the risk of leaving their “desk jobs” to pursue their dreams – and to those who are considering it.” With the release of ‘Diversify’, Dennis Lau became the first Malaysian instrumental artist to have an album released by Sony Music. His evolution as a musician has been influenced by the different musical genres that have swept across the decades, mainly through musicians such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ryan Leslie, Wang Lee Hom, and John Mayer.
