Top10 shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur

I love to shop. What are the must-visit shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur?

Kuala Lumpur has numerous shopping malls. Tourists may find it difficult to decide which of them are absolute must-visits and which are the ones that can easily be skipped during their stay in Kuala Lumpur. First off; if you are visiting Kuala Lumpur with the sole purpose of going on a serious shopping spree you should know that there is actually only one place to stay and that is in a hotel around Bukit Bintang. Most of the malls in our top10 are located in this area. Luckily many of the popular 5-star hotels are located in this area, so it should be easy to find proper accommodation. But also budget travelers are able to find accommodation that suits their budget; as there are many guesthouses located in the Changkat Bukit Bintang area (only a 5/10 minute walk from all major shopping malls).

In our list we took multiple factors into account. Not all malls are perhaps interesting for every type of shopper. Some of the great malls are located well outside of Kuala Lumpur, perhaps still very much worth a visit to some, for others probably not worth the hassle.

1. Pavilion KL

Our personal favorite by far is Pavilion KL. Pavilion was opened in 2007 and has been an instant hit since then. Pavilion offers many nice shops, and caters to the more general type of shopper. There are many luxurious shops, but also enough regular shops. Pavilion has a great food court but also many restaurants and (coffee) bars. Definitely the place to be (visit) for tourists.

2. Suria KLCC

Suria KLCC has been one of the most popular tourist malls for ages. Locals always call it a tourist mall, but still many tens of thousands come to this mall every weekend to relax and hang out. Tourists may find many shops offer different products that at other malls, Suria KLCC has many shops that sell familiar international brands (and is also know for carrying western sizes).

3. Plaza Lowyat

Not all tourists will like Lowyat as it is small, crowded and often very noisy. Lowyat is the premier IT, Gadget and Lifestyle mall in Kuala Lumpur. Here you will find hundreds of small shops selling luxurious products like cameras, phones, laptops, tablets and much more. If you are looking for electronic accessories, this is definitely the place to be. Do know that you can only get great discounts after some tough bargaining.

4. Midvalley Mega Mall The Gardens

This is the first mall that is not located within the city center of Kuala Lumpur. It means that you have to get into a taxi and travel for a bit first before arriving at one of the biggest and most popular (local) mall in the city. Midvalley is already a few years old. Here you can find many regular shops selling all kinds of products. Midvalley is connected to The Gardens, a luxurious mall (and also one of the prettiest) with many exclusive brands.

5. Lot10

Lot10 is perhaps the most centrally located mall in Kuala Lumpur, right along Jalan Bukit Bintang. It has quite a few nice shops and also a National Geographer Flagship Store. In the basement you can find Hutong, a wonderful food court with mainly Chinese hawkers. Lot10 lies conveniently between numerous other popular malls in Bukit Bintang. If you enter this area by Monorail then the station to embark is right next to Lot10.

6. Fahrenheit88

Fahrenheit88 is a modern mall near opposite of Pavilion KL. It used to be known as KL Plaza, but the new owner wanted to rename the mall after a huge renovation. Fahrenheit88 has some very nice stores. At the top floor you find Signature IT, a huge IT department store. Fahrenheit88 became one of the places to be among locals because of the huge Uniqlo clothing shop that occupies a few floors.

7. 1Utama

1Utama shopping mall Kuala Lumpur

Though pretty far away from Kuala Lumpur City Center, 1Utama is a not to be missed shopping mall. After the huge renovation it again it a wonderful place to shop for all kinds of products (and also one of the biggest). There is also a huge Foodrepublic food court, where you can try many local dishes. 1Utama is not really popular among tourists because of the distance from most of the tourist hotels; still it is very much worth a visit.

8. Sunway Pyramid

Sunway Pyramid is extremely popular among locals that live outside of Kuala Lumpur. It could very well be the most popular mall in Malaysia when looking at absolute amount of monthly visitors. Sunway is more than a shopping mall; it is a huge entertainment complex with numerous bars, restaurants, hundreds of shops, hotels, resorts and even a huge amusement park (and water park). Those that travel with children will probably do them a huge favor by visiting Sunway Pyramid.

9. The Curve

The Curve is neither the biggest nor the most popular mall in Kuala Lumpur. It is also located pretty far out of the city center. Still it is a nice place to visit. Besides the mall there are many bars and restaurants. Opposite the Curve is Ikano Power Center, where you can find a few flagship stores of popular local and foreign brands. The Curve is especially popular among the local expat community.

10. Berjaya Times Square

Last in our list is Berjaya Times Square; the biggest shopping mall in Malaysia. It has well over 600 shops, ranging from huge stores at the lower levels to numerous small shops at the higher levels. There is even an indoor roller coaster inside this shopping, which makes it the perfect mall to visit if you are traveling with children. Berjaya Times Square is also located within the Bukit Bintang area; at a 10 minutes’ walk from Lot10 or Lowyat Plaza.

Other very popular malls in and around Kuala Lumpur

Malls that didn’t make it into our top10 are still very much worth a visit, especially the ones within the Golden Triangle (Bukit Bintang area and KLCC area). Below we listed a few other shopping malls and explained the main reasons you might have for visiting them.

12. Sungei Wang BB Plaza: together the most popular local malls in Kuala Lumpur.

13. AvenueK: modern but small shopping center opposite of Suria KLCC.

16. IMBA Plaza: the best (or worst) place to buy pirated dvd’s, software and other media.

17. Great Eastern Mall: biggest mall in the Ampang area. Especially popular among expats.

18. Tropicana Mall: popular ‘family mall’. Many furniture and children stores.

19. Plaza Mont Kiara: modern mall catering to expats that live in the Mt. Kiara area.

20. Bangsar Shopping Center: most popular expat mall in the Bangsar area. Best place to buy products like cheese, bread and other typical western products.

Coffee places in Malaysia

There are several coffee shops in Malaysia. Most fall under one of the big chains, you see those coffee shops all over the country. Every shopping mall has at least one or several coffee shops; this also applies to airports within Malaysia. The most popular coffee in Malaysia are: Starbucks, Coffee Bean Tea Leaf, Dôme, San Francisco and Espressamente illy. Although the coffee from big chains such as Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Dôme are fine, you’ll drink better coffee at a different coffee shop; San Francisco Coffee. Sadly, you do not often see this coffee shop inside shopping malls, but more at the bottom of the business premises.

We really appreciate a good coffee ourselves and therefore we drank coffee several times at the above mentioned coffee shops for the past few years. In our opinion, Espressamente illy has the best coffee, closely followed by San Francisco Coffee. The other shops have pretty good coffee; not super good, but certainly not bad. In our opinion, Starbucks has pretty good coffee, and there is always a pleasant atmosphere in a Starbucks coffee shop. Starbucks’ disadvantage is that they have no breakfast or lunch menu card. Coffee Bean also has pretty good coffee, and they also have an extensive menu of non-coffee drinks, aside from a pleasant atmosphere. Their breakfast and lunch menu card is also very extensive. Dôme has mediocre coffee, but a good lunch card with delicious western dishes and on top of that, they have amazingly tasting shakes.

The nice thing about the many coffee shops in Malaysia is that they always have a pleasant atmosphere. They are excellent places to go and relax after a long day full of activities. For example, if you’ve walked through the center of Kuala Lumpur for a long time, nothing is better than relaxing at a Starbucks or Coffee Bean. Even if you simply don’t enjoy ‘watching people’, it’s nice to sit at one of these places.

Apart from the coffee and ice blended shakes, all coffee shops offer a wide range of tasty snacks, such as cakes, brownies and muffins. The coffee shops are therefore also the perfect place to eat sweets (eg. after dinner, for a coffee and a ‘dessert’).

Espressamente illy

Espressamente illy is a coffee shop established by the internationally known coffee brand illy. Currently, there are more than 200 establishments worldwide, including some in Malaysia. Espressamente illy is not very well represented in Malaysia yet; with only one establishment in Pavilion KL and in Bangsar Village I. You will find the establishment in Pavilion KL just outside of the mall, directly to the left of the main entrance. It is a popular terrace; a nice place to watch people. Sometimes they hire an Italian band that plays great jazz music. The coffee is fantastic, the service is excellent and the snacks are of high quality. Besides the sweet snacks, they also have snacks such as cheese, olives, etc. Espressamente illy is our number 1 coffee chain.

San Francisco Coffee

San Francisco Coffee is one of our personal favorites, and ranks second place for the best coffee chains in Malaysia. Although there are fewer establishments of this chain in Malaysia, they have fantastic coffee. In addition to the standard coffee, they offer a wide range of shakes. The lunch menu card is simple, but it contains a few dishes that are well worth it. San Francisco Coffee establishments can be found especially within business premises; and during lunch (and in the morning) there are sometimes long queues of people who come to get their coffee there. In total, there are more than 25 San Francisco Coffee establishments in Malaysia and Singapore.

San Francisco Coffee also sells coffee beans or ground coffee in their shops; perfect for your own coffee machine. Loyal customers can ask for a savings card at the checkout. You show this card with every order and when your card is full with stamps, you will receive a free coffee of your choice. In the city center, you will find the coffee shop in Suria KLCC, amongst other places.

Starbucks

Starbucks is the most popular coffee shop in Malaysia. You will find one or multiple establishments in any mall. There are more than 115 Starbucks coffee shops in Malaysia. The first shop opened its doors in 1998 in KL Plaza (now Fahrenheit88). In Kuala Lumpur, you can find them on every corner; sometimes you look from one establishment right into the other. The atmosphere is always great at Starbucks; it’s a place where many employees come to relax during their work or break.

The coffee is fine, but not super, compared to better alternatives (though I have to admit it also depends on who operates the machine and how busy it is in the store). Although they don’t have a breakfast and lunch menu card, you will find a wide range of snacks such as muffins, cupcakes and brownies. They also have bagels, wraps and the very tasty ‘Chicken Melt’. Starbucks also actively works for a better future and environment in a fun way. For example, you will receive a substantial discount when you bring your own mug or thermos. To promote this, they have a wide range of mugs and thermoses for sale in each establishment.

The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf

Herbert B. Hyman launched the coffee shop: ‘The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf’ in 1963. His commitment to excellence and quality made him the founder of the coffee in California. The Coffee Bean Tea Leaf has since grown to be one of the largest coffee and tea companies in the world. Years ago, the first Coffee Bean in Malaysia was opened. Since then, many establishments have been added, totaling more than 50 throughout Malaysia, where it is almost as successful as Starbucks. The company operates primarily in America and Asia.

You can find the Coffee Bean and Starbucks together in a field of view in pretty much every mall. Starbucks has fine coffee, but a small selection of other products. The Coffee Bean has a much wider variety. There’s nothing like a delicious breakfast consisting of a tasty ‘focaccia sandwich with chicken and dressing’ and a large ‘coffee of the day’. This breakfast is a perfect alternative to the sometimes mediocre breakfast of the hotel or guesthouse where you stay (aside from fantastic breakfast at luxurious 5 star hotels). They also have delicious ice blended shakes, where the ‘Malibu Dream’ is one of the tastiest, and various tasty snacks (such as brownies, muffins and fresh cakes).

Dôme

Dôme is a coffee shop with a very luxurious appearance. The prices are also a bit higher than those from Starbucks or Coffee Bean. Dôme also has a very extensive lunch card which even contains a number of dishes for dinner. And they have an extensive range of deliciously unhealthy shakes; the Espreski. Although it should pass for an ice blended shake, it’s more like an extensive dessert. The dishes on the menu are all very western-inspired; each dish comes with some fries and mayo. In total, there are 14 Dôme coffee shops in Malaysia; including in Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL and The Gardens.

Other Coffee Places in Malaysia

There are a few other coffee places worth mentioning. There are a few branches of the Pacific Coffee Company, and they serve a good cup of coffee. Unfortunately, there are only a few shops and most are not located conveniently for tourists. Another place with good coffee is Gloria Jeans. Again, Gloria Jeans is usually located within office buildings in the bigger cities (mostly KL). Austin Chase also have a few branches, but up until now we never had a good cup of coffee there.

Baristas in Malaysia

Besides the well-known coffee chains, there are several baristas in Malaysia with real coffee experts at work. Most baristas can be found outside the city center, usually in trendy suburbs. A famous barista in the center is RAW along Jalan Ampang (Wisma Equity). Artisan Roast is famous outside of the city, within the TTDI area.

Loyalty Cards

Most coffee shops have a savings card. With every order (sometimes over a certain amount) you get a stamp on the card. When the card is full, you can order a free coffee or ice blended shake. Starbucks and San Francisco have such a savings card. The Coffee Bean has the ‘Coffee Bean Card’. The card costs RM25, the balance on the card is RM30 after activating it. For each ringgit you deposit afterward, 15% of the deposited amount will be added to the balance (minimum deposit: RM20). Additionally, you will get another 10 points for each ringgit you spend. These points can also be exchanged for products at the coffee shop.

Free wireless Internet

Almost every coffee shop in Malaysia offers free Internet. Of course, you will need to bring your own laptop or smart phone. You can easily log onto the wireless network of the coffee shop. Per establishment, you often need a different username and password. This information can be obtained from the shop counter. At some establishments you may need to register on a website, and then you’ll be able to log onto the wireless network using your own name and password. Do not be surprised if almost every visitor is sitting at a table with a laptop. In Malaysia, many people work ‘outside’ of their home, while enjoying a large cup of coffee.

Golden Triangle, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Golden Triangle is Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping and nightlife district.

Located to the northeast of the Central KL, the Golden Triangle roughly covers the area north of Jalan Pudu, south of Jalan Ampang and west of Jalan Imbi and Jalan Tun Razak. It includes the ever busy shopping area of Bukit Bintang, the office towers of Jalan Raja Chulan, the Jalan Sultan Ismail five-star hotel strip, the Jalan P. Ramlee party street, and the entire Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) (not to be confused with KL’s traditional City Centre) which is home to the Petronas Twin Towers, Suria KLCC shopping centre, KLCC Convention Centre and the KLCC Park.

Getting There

The best ways to reach the Golden Triangle are by monorail and light rail transit, depending on which part of the district you want to get to. Monorail is best for the Bukit Bintang area and environs (including Jalan Imbi, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulan) while the LRT is the perfect way to get to the KLCC and Jalan Ampang areas.

The main monorail stations (and the adjacent shopping centres and important landmarks) in the Golden Triangle are Imbi (Berjaya Times Square), Bukit Bintang (Sungei Wang Plaza, Bukit Bintang Plaza, Lot 10, Star Hill Gallery, KL Plaza, Pavillion), Raja Chulan (offices along Jalan Raja Chulan and Jalan Sultan Ismail) and Bukit Nanas (Concorde Hotel, Rennaissance Hotel and Good World Hotel). Bukit Nanas station is also a short walk to the Dang Wangi LRT station.

The main LRT stations serving the district are Dang Wangi (for the area around the Jalan Ampang-Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection), KLCC (KLCC, Petronas Twin Towers, Avenue K) and Ampang Park (for Ampang Park shopping centre and Nikko Hotel).

Things to do

Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC, Jalan Ampang (Kelana Jaya Line: KLCC). Open 8:30AM-5PM except Monday. Until recently the tallest buildings in the world, they have since been surpassed by other buildings in height but remain among the most spectacular. Visitors may pick up passes to marvel at the view from the Skybridge (level 41-42), one of the highest suspended bridges in the world. Entry is now RM50 (December 2011) and limited to the first 1200 who show up, so get there early (best is 7:45 to 8:00 AM) because available tickets are usually snapped up by 11:00. In general you have about 10 minutes at the Skybridge. The view is not particularly inspiring and note that you are only permitted to spend around ten minutes up there.

Aquaria KLCC, KLCC Convention Centre Basement Levels 1 and 2 (Kelana Jaya Line: KLCC), A gigantic aquarium recently opened, housing 5,000 varieties of tropical fish. Has an underwater tunnel, various exhibits of flora and fauna, and multimedia kiosks. Aquaria “offers a unique underwater ‘edu-tainment experience”, as stated on the KLCC website. Open from 11 AM to 8 PM daily, including school and public holidays; last admission at 7pm. Entrance fee for adults: RM38 (RM28 with the Malaysian ID card – MyKad); Children 3-12 years old: RM26 (RM22 with MyKad); for those below 3 years old, admission free. RM25 for students. Make sure you carry student ID cards.

Petrosains, KLCC Level 4 (Kelana Jaya Line: KLCC) An exhibit of the science and technology behind the petroleum industry and more. A great place to bring kids, but not too high on the agenda for older folks. Adults RM25, teens RM20, children RM15; you must book your tickets at least 30 minutes in advance (expect queues on weekends).

KL Tower (Menara KL), Jalan Punchak. The viewing deck at 276m provides great city views, and you’ll be a few metres higher than the Twin Towers since the tower is built on a hill (also, the twin towers observation deck is 100m below at 170m). Entry to the viewing deck by express elevator costs RM38 and is open from 9 AM to 10 PM daily; this includes use of a PDA for a multimedia guided tour of the view and use of the binoculars. For a free bonus, check out the wonderfully bombastic free film on the tower’s construction, screened in a little cinema on the tower ground floor. It is possible to come up one floor higher to the revolving restaurant but only by dining there (between RM40 to RM140, including the ride up from the base). There is free shuttle bus service from the main gate to the base of the tower, though number of seats in the bus is very limited. There is also a Hackett Bungee ride and flying fox for RM30 which operates at the base of KL Tower.

Shopping

Bukit Bintang is the main shopping area of the Golden Triangle with many of KL’s most well-known malls. The main shopping streets are Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Imbi. KLCC has the popular Suria KLCC mall while the adjacent Jalan Ampang also has several shopping complexes.


Sungei Wang Plaza, Jalan Bukit Bintang (direct bridge to Monorail Bukit Bintang), Bukit Bintang. A popular place among local teenagers where fashion clothes, shoes, accessories and other trinkets and local designer clothes can be found with affordable price. A great place to buy cameras and watches (discounts are given for cash payments, although credit cards are accepted). Sungei Wang also hosts a concentration of tailors of men’s and women’s clothing. This is a maze of a mall, take a compass with you to find your way out!

Lot 10, Jalan Bukit Bintang, (direct bridge to Monorail Bukit Bintang), Bukit Bintang. A favourite among Malaysians and tourists alike, Lot 10 is Bukit Bintang’s very own “Emerald City”, housing boutiques that will appeal to shoppers looking for goods in all price brackets. It houses the Isetan department store.

Fahrenheit 88, Jalan Bukit Bintang. Previously known as previously known as KL Plaza, major tenants include Uniqlo.

Starhill Gallery, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Bukit Bintang, adjoining JW Marriott Hotel. The nearest station to this mall is Monorail Bukit Bintang. Starhill is a literally an English translation of “Bukit Bintang”. An upscale, luxury retail mall that rivals Suria KLCC for designer goods, is worth a visit just to look at the different interior designs especially ‘Feast’ floor (Ground Floor). A must-visit for watch aficionados as the ‘Adorn’ floor (1st floor) houses the biggest selection of designer wrist-watch boutiques like, amongst others, Jaeger-Le Coultre, Roger Dubuis, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Tag Heuer, Omega, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, Patek Philippe and Rolex, of course. Great if you have lots of cash to splurge.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Bukit Bintang, opposite the Starhill Gallery. This KL’s latest luxury megamall is an anchor piece of the world-class urban development comprising two luxury residential towers, a corporate office. The mall has six distinctive precincts, Couture Pavilion, Bintang Circle, Gourmet_Emporium, Connection, Seventh Heaven and Home that contains approximately 450 stores, providing customers with infinite choices and the latest in fashion, entertainment, health and beauty, electronic, gourmet food and countless others. There is pedestrian bridge that links the mall to KLCC.

Low Yat Plaza, Jalan Bukit Bintang (Monorail Imbi, walk past Melia and turn left into an alley before Imbi Plaza or exit from Monorail Bukit Bintang towards Jalan Bukit Bintang south), Bukit Bintang. A good place for computer hardware, game consoles and handphones. A “must visit” for the tech inclined. All IT Hypermart (4th floor) is a good one-stop shop, but there are dozens of specialist computing boutiques for the enthusiast.

Berjaya Times Square, Jalan Imbi (direct bridge to Monorail Imbi), Bukit Bintang. A gargantuan ten-story shopping mall that houses the Malaysian department store Metrojaya, the Cosmo’s World theme park (see Do) plus an IMAX theater. The upper floors are still a bit sparse but it’s starting to reach critical mass and can get quite packed on weekends.

Other shopping malls in the Bukit Bintang area include BB Plaza, KL Plaza, a mini retail annexe known as Piccolo Galeria.

Suria KLCC, – Located beneath the Petronas Twin Towers (LRT Kelana Jaya Line: KLCC). An upscale shopping centre with plenty of designer labels and brands, KLCC has quickly become one of the top hangout-spots in KL. Some very good eating options too. You will see more tourists than locals here though. The LRT stops at another shopping mall called Avenue K. There is a tunnel from the train station which links to Suria KLCC.

Eat

You’ll find any kind of food that you ever wanted to try in the Golden Triangle. For budget streetside food, there is Jalan Alor (although the area is becoming a little too touristy), while expensive restaurants line Changkat Bukit Bintang. Jalan Imbi and the roads running off it have many Chinese restaurants. Jalan Bukit Bintang near the intersection with Jalan Sultan Ismail is becoming the focal point of KL’s Middle Eastern restaurants. All the malls in the Golden Triangle have foodcourts where you can try local and international fare in comfortably air-conditioned surroundings.

Drink

The Golden Triangle is the party heart of KL. Here, you’ll find many of the city’s entertainment spots, whether they’re dance clubs, karaoke joints or just watering holes. The main party drag is Jalan P. Ramlee near the intersection with Jalan Sultan Ismail, whereas the area between Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Imbi are better known for its Chinese-style hostess nightclubs. For something quieter, Changkat Bukit Bintang offers a few pubs. Most five-star hotels also have clubs and bars.

The area also has its fair share of coffee places, mostly belonging to the usual international or local chains. However, Malaysians usually like to head to “Mamak stalls” to wind down after a night of partying. These can be found almost everywhere, especially where there are many clubs, and you can get teh tarik and other warm bevearage and food like rot canai at these stalls.

Sleep

Although better known for its collection of five-star hotels, the Golden Triangle also has a few budget places offering relatively cheap beds when compared with Chinatown in the City Centre.
